Edgar Allen Poe is known as one of the pioneers
of haunting storytelling and writings. He was also known as a satirist. Having a love of both scary movies and books combined with the irony and humor that life shows us, the collective works of Poe seemed a perfect base onto which to add my own layerings hoping to merge the voices. I used watercolor, pen, ink, acrylic paint, colored pencil, collage and graphite to make small pieces that include the words and storyline into the composition. The pieces were then framed by brittle pages from an old book titled, Ishmael. Ishmael read like a soap opera through a lens from the early 1900 century. It is also the iconic name beginning the driven story of Moby Dick. These collected stories represent the base of our cultural history which help to shape our current experiences. They each have their own evolved journey through circled words, objects or juxtaposed images, symbolic colors, and edits. These fragile pieces mirror days we live. My idea of combining these texts with my work hopefully stimulates new narratives which allows the imagination to flow and insights to emerge.
